OpenAI Tests New AI Models O3 and O3 Mini in a Competitive Environment

Investing.com -- Artificial intelligence company OpenAI announced on Friday that it is testing its new reasoning AI models, o3 and o3 mini. This development indicates increased competition in the AI sector, where rivals like Google are also striving to develop more advanced models capable of tackling complex problems.

CEO Sam Altman shared the company's plan to launch the o3 mini model by the end of January, followed by the full o3 model. These larger and more powerful language models are expected to outperform existing models and potentially attract new investments and users.

According to OpenAI's blog post, the company's previous o1 models demonstrated the ability to solve complex tasks through reasoning in areas such as science, coding, and mathematics, as well as tackling more challenging problems. The upcoming o3 and o3 mini models, which are currently undergoing internal security testing, are expected to be stronger than the o1 models.

OpenAI is initiating an application process for those interested in testing the o3 models before their public launch, with the application window closing on January 10.

Since launching ChatGPT in November 2022, OpenAI has become a key player in the AI sector, sparking a process that could be seen as an AI arms race. The company's growing popularity and continuous product launches have successfully raised significant funding, closing a $6.6 billion financing round in October.

Meanwhile, another major competitor in the AI field, Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL), released the second generation of its AI model Gemini in early December as part of its efforts to regain leadership in the AI technology race.
