Credit Card Count in Turkey Rises by 11% Annually, Reaching 128.9 Million
As of November 2024, the number of credit cards in Turkey increased by 11% compared to the same month last year, reaching 128.9 million. According to data released by the Interbank Card Center (BKM), the number of bank cards rose by 3% to 193.5 million, while the number of prepaid cards surged by 25% to 110.4 million. The total number of cards reached 432.8 million, representing a 10% increase compared to the same period last year.
The total payment amount made in November using credit cards, bank cards, and prepaid cards increased by 73% compared to the same period last year, totaling 1,533.3 billion TL. Of these card payments, 1,303.3 billion TL were made with credit cards, 198.8 billion TL with bank cards, and 31.1 billion TL with prepaid cards. The growth rate for payments made with credit cards compared to the same period last year was 78%, while it was 44% for bank cards and 92% for prepaid cards.
The total number of payments made using credit cards, bank cards, and prepaid cards in November rose by 11% year-on-year to 1.55 billion. Among these card payments, 895.2 million were made with credit cards, 534.1 million with bank cards, and 120.0 million with prepaid cards. The growth rate for the number of payments made with credit cards compared to the same period last year was 15%, while it was 3% for bank cards and 16% for prepaid cards.
Online card payments increased by 74% year-on-year to 482.1 billion TL, with their share of total card payments reaching 31%. The number of online card payments grew by 6% year-on-year to 244.0 million, accounting for 16% of total online card payments. The number of contactless payments made with cards increased by 19% compared to the same period last year, totaling 1,008.4 million. The value of contactless payments rose by 92% year-on-year to 465.0 billion TL, with four out of five card payments made in stores in November being contactless.
