India's Steel Imports from China Reach Record Levels
According to India's leading data, its final steel imports from China reached an all-time high during the first eight months of the fiscal year ending in March 2025, raising concerns among domestic producers regarding cheap shipments from China.
As the second-largest crude steel producer in the world, India became a net importer during this period, leading to the highest total final steel imports in eight years.
Data indicates that India shipped 6.5 million tons of final steel products, marking a 26.6% increase compared to the previous year.
Furthermore, data shows that China sent 1.96 million tons of steel to India during the April-November period, an annual increase of 22.8%.
Beijing primarily exported stainless steel, hot-rolled coils, sheets, electrical sheets, galvanized flat or corrugated sheets, pipes, bars, and rods among other qualities.
Additionally, final steel imports from Japan also reached their highest level in at least six years during the April-November period, with imports more than doubling to 1.4 million metric tons.
During this period, China, Japan, and South Korea accounted for 79% of India’s total final steel imports.
